The Hang Out

Governor’s Island presents itself as an anomaly within the context of New York City. Once one sets foot on the island, they find themselves among natural trees, small hills, an expansive lawn, and a historic fort and castle. While the modern day metropolis sits in the background, contrasting itself against the island’s open grounds, one realizes that they are now set free from the spatial constraints of the urban grid. It is not uncommon that an urge sets in to lie down in the grass, stare at the clouds, and begin to dream.

Erected within the South Parade Grounds, The Hang Out arises from this urge to dream- offering guests a place to meet, learn, play, or simply hang out. Constructed from recyclable clothes hangers and plastic zip ties, the structure encourages the act of event to take place. The pavilion, with its changeability in program can become an exhibition that educates the public on arts programs, a mini theatre for dance and performance, and venue for fashion shows.
