Re-Covering Calvino

Italo Calvino stands as one of the most famous postmodern authors of the 20th Century. His writing, which can best be described as magical realism, has become influential for subsequent classes of authors, artists, and architects. While Calvino’s novels, now considered classics, retain a strong relevance to each new generation, they also hold a warm place for those already familiar with his work. In these redesigns for Calvino novels, I wanted to pique the interest of a younger and more unfamiliar audience by updating the covers. At the same time, I wanted to reintroduce these stories to the established Calvino fan base. All three covers were designed in a similar style to help them read as a series. Using photographic collage and digital manipulative techniques, the covers echo the visual sentiments of Calvino’s magical realist style- balancing the line that divides reality and the imaginary.

Covers:

01 Invisible Cities

02 Mr. Palomar
